We all know that if you don’t want to get pregnant, you have to have use some form of contraception.
We also know, that even when using birth control, accidents can still sometimes happen.
But what you probably don’t know, is that there are some people out there who think eating papayas and figs for several weeks will prevent you from conceiving a child.
That’s according to a tweet that recently went viral on social media, claiming to share with women a number of ‘natural birth control options’.
These so-called birth control options were taken from a website called Home Remedy Hacks, and as well as papaya, they suggest consuming large amounts of cinnamon or drinking ginger tea after having unprotected intercourse to stop a woman from becoming pregnant.
More worryingly, they also advised using the plant pennroyal, which if consumed in high quantities, could cause liver damage, seizures and in some cases even death.
The bizarre tweet garnered more than 12,000 likes before botanist James Wong stepped in and shared an important warning to all who might have been taking it seriously.
He said: “As a botanist I can tell you this tweet with 1000s of shares could result in the deaths of women. It needs taking down fast.”
The tweet was has since been deleted, but that hasn’t stopped people from making fun of the ridiculous remedies – especially the papaya one.
Papaya is a fruit pregnant women are often told to avoid eating as it contains latex, but that doesn’t mean it’s an effective form of contraception, as many were quick to point out.
One person said: “Nobody really thinks eating papaya 2x/day prevents pregnancy right? God help us all we’re doomed.”
Another commented: “Imagine your man doesn’t have a condom and you be like don’t worry baby, I have five papayas in the fridge lemme eat them first.”
A third added: “Well, I can think of one way a papaya could prevent pregnancy, but that also sounds really painful…”
