6 Tips For Getting Through Valentine’s Day If You’re Single

Nothing screams “you’re single” like Valentine’s Day right? Valentine’s day is that lingering date on the calendar all singles want to avoid and can amplify the already negative feelings you may have about your relationship status. But fear not, it doesn’t all need to be doom and gloom while you scroll through your social media platforms! We chat to Lysn Psychologist Nancy Sokarno about how to do Valentine’s Day if you’re single:

1. Book in a date

If the thought of spending Valentine’s Day alone is a panic, book in a date on February 14th! Having something to look forward to will take the edge off this daunting day. It doesn’t need to be with a partner or a romantic date. Perhaps you set aside time to do something you’ve been meaning to do for a while or catching up with an old friend. The idea of having something booked in ensures you don’t spend the whole day scrolling through your timelines on social media wishing things were the way everyone portrays them on their highlight reel!

 2. Do Galentine’s Day instead

Similar to booking in a date, arrange to do Galentine’s Day instead. What is Galentine’s Day you ask? It’s when you round up your single friends, colleagues or even mum and have a fancy date night or curl up and watch Anti-valentines day movies with snacks. Spending time with other amazing girls will remind you that having loving and supportive friends is just as good! It’s traditionally celebrated the day before Valentines Day, but who says you can’t do it on Feb 14th too?!

 3. Spread the love

Who says we have to wait for that secret admirer on Valentine’s Day to get flowers! Get a group of your girlfriends together and arrange a KK style gift swap on Valentine’s day. Sharing the love ensures no one feels left out on Lover’s Day.

 4. Practice some self-care

Let’s call it Self-Love day, a day where you remember how awesome you are and that self-love always comes first. Start your day off with some exercise, I always feel better after a sweat session! Then book in a hair appointment or massage and wind down with a bath and your favourite movie, learn to spoil yourself, you deserve it! Remember the time that we have alone is useful for our growth and development. Grab your favourite book, learn something new, paint or draw, reflect on all the great things you’ve achieved being single—you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything!

5. Avoid social media

We all know social media can sometimes bring up a case of FOMO or envy, especially on milestone days like Valentine’s Day. It’s likely on this day your feed will be full of loved-up posts, or gloating couples sharing all their gifts. Put your phone away this Valentine’s Day and celebrate being in the ‘now’. Ignorance is sometimes bliss and that’s certainly the case when it comes to Valentines Day—you don’t need to be reminded of how happy couples are claiming to be.

6. Throw an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party

Just like Jessica Biel’s character on the movie ‘Valentine’s Day’, tackle the date head-on by celebrating being single. Being single can be an amazing time in someone’s life, so use Valentine’s Day to celebrate it in the best way, by throwing an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party. Get some friends together, enjoy each other’s company and before you know it you won’t even remember those sappy loved up couples on Valentines Day
